Most dogs need at least one good walk a day, and many do better with two. The right number depends on breed, age, energy and whether anyone is home during the day.
A young, high energy dog in a Ballston or Rosslyn apartment with no yard may need two or three walks to stay happy and out of trouble. A settled older dog might be content with one longer stroll. Puppies need little and often.
If you work away from home, a midday walk breaks up the day, lets your dog relieve themselves and burns off the energy that otherwise turns into chewing and barking. That is where a reliable local walker earns their keep.
A good rule of thumb: if your dog is restless, destructive or hard to settle in the evening, they probably need more exercise during the day.
